  1. What is an Alumni Redirection?

Alumni Redirections, at the School of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of New South Wales, provide a permanent and reconfigurable email redirection and web page redirection service for graduates (Alumni) of this school.

In brief, graduates register a permissible name (pname), by which to be known within the domain "alumni.cse.unsw.edu.au", and then register the actual email address and web addresses to which messages and references will be directed.  Once this is done, all email messages addressed to "pname@alumni.cse.unsw.edu.au" will be redirected to the registered email address, while all web references to "http://www.alumni.cse.unsw.edu.au/PN/" will be redirected to the registered web address.

The alumni email redirection is intended to replace any email alias you may have set up for your CSE address, although we generally allow CSE mail aliases to last at least 6 months after the associated CSE account expires to give the user time to notify correspondents of their new alumni address.

  2. Who is eligible?

Anyone who has graduated or is about to graduate from one of CSE's undergraduate or postgraduate degree programs can obtain an Alumni Redirection.

  3. What is my email address?

If your alumni alias is user99, your alumni email address is user99@alumni.cse.unsw.edu.au.

  4. What is my web address?

If your alumni alias is user99, your alumni web address is http://alumni.cse.unsw.edu.au/user99/.

If you have a file that you want to specify in your real web site, you can do that by simply adding it to the end of the url.  For instance, if you have a file at www.isp.com/~me/dir/page.html and your redirection points to http://www.isp.com/~me, you can access it with the url http://alumni.cse.unsw.edu.au/user99/dir/page.html.

  5. How do I create an Alumni Redirection?

Go to alumni.cse.unsw.edu.au and choose "Creating a New Redirection".  Then follow the steps to create your redirection.  You will need to enter your date of birth and student ID number before creating your redirection.  Once you have done that and the system has verified that you are eligible, you will be able to select a username and password.  You will also be able to enter your email and web addresses.

  6. How do I modify the redirection details?

Go to alumni.cse.unsw.edu.au and choose "Modify Redirection Details".  Enter your password and your student ID and you can change any and all details.

  7. How do I delete my Redirection?

Go to alumni.cse.unsw.edu.au and choose "Remove Redirection".  Enter your password and your student ID and your Redirection will be deleted.

    NOTE: THIS ACTION IS PERMANENT

  8. Can I have more than one email or web redirection?

No.  You can change aliases once a month, but only your most current alias will work.

  9. What happens if someone tries to use one of my old aliases?

Any old aliases will be reserved for you for at least 6 months, which should be enough time to tell everyone that your email address has changed.

  10. Will my alumni alias ever expire?

No.  It is intended to be a permanent address that you can always give out to people, regardless of where your Redirection actually resides. Of course, to work properly and as intended, you will need to make sure that the redirections are always current.

  11. What if I forget my password?

Go to alumni.cse.unsw.edu.au and select "I forgot my password".  It will be sent to your email redirection.

  12. What are permissible names for Alumni Redirections?

There are two possible forms for user names, and the forms cannot be mixed. Both must end in the last two digits of your year of graduation, which will be shown on the form to define your user name.  It must contain between 5 and 12 total characters, which gives you 3-10 characters to choose.

    1. Your user name can be made up of two or more parts of your name. For instance, if your name is Samuel Adam Jones and you graduated in 1997, possible user names include:
      • samj97
      • saj97
      • adsam97
      • jonesam97

NOTE: Your username cannot be identified as just one part of one name, so jones97 would not be acceptable even though it could also be viewed as having two separate parts.

    2. Your user name can be made up of two or more parts of your names, separated by periods.  The above examples could also be entered as:
      • sam.j97
      • s.a.j97
      • ad.sam97
      • jone.sam97

  13. Can I use a nickname?

Maybe.  If you want to use a common abbreviation for your name, such as Sammy for Samuel or Liz for Elizabeth, you can.  However, it will probably not be in our database of names, so if it doesn't work mail ss@cse.unsw.EDU.AU and request that it be added.

Uncommon nicknames or ones that have nothing to do with your name are not allowed.

  14. How often can I change my username?

Once per month.  But the purpose of the Alumni Redirection is to have a permanent name, so you probably don't want to change it very often.

  15. Does the Alumni Redirection give me access to the CSE computers?

No.  It simply provides a permanent and redirectable email and web address.

  16. Who can look up my real email address?

Currently, nobody.  At some point in the future, there may be a provision for making email addresses publically available, but only if people agree. If and when that functionality is added, you will be notified and given the option to release your email address so that other people can find you.  Your email address, web address, or alumni alias will not be released without your permission.

  17. What mail will you send me?

The school may send out occasional announcements to the alumni, but it is expected to be very infrequent.  There will probably be an option to not receive mail from the school if you don't want it.

  18. What if I have a problem that isn't covered here?

Email ss@cse.unsw.EDU.AU and describe your problem.  They will look into it for you.
